POORVA KARMA
Themain aimforsnehanaalong withswedana is tobring thevitiated doshas to an eliminationform. Itis utilizedas an independent therapyand also aspoorvakarmafor the ShodhanChikitsa.
SNEHANA
It’s also knownasOleation Therapy.It is aprocedures that are performed prior tostarting the Panchakarma treatment.As mentioned inCharaka Samhita there are mainlyfour kinds of snehana dravyawhich are considered to be the best for snehan.
1) Ghee (ghrita)
2) Oil (taila)
3) Fat (vasa)
4) Bonemarrow(majja)
Dadimadighrita, tila taila and bala taila, as well as ashwagandhaGhrita are just a few ofthedrugs usedinsnehana.
Themethod is used to lubricate the entirebodyby applying medicated oils/gheeinternally and externally.When the medicated oil/ghee has beenapplied internally, it is known assnehapanam, it is veryimportant procedure for Panchakarma.
CLASSIFICATION OF SNEHANA-
1.) Internal oleation
Itincludes consumption ofsnehana dravya , whether in a medicinalorunmedicated form. Itmay or may notbecombinedwith other ayurvedicmedications or food items.The method lubricates thetissuesand various parts ofhuman body.
2) External oleation/massage/abhyanga
Itincludes head massage or body massage,gargles and other treatments using medicated oils.
SWEDANA
It’s also known assteam therapy, also known astherapeutic sudation. It’sanother method used prior toPanchakarma.The therapy improvescirculation of blood and removestoxins through the skin poresout of the body.
It is amongthebest method that hasbeeninto practice since longback. Itis utilized as aan shaman chikitsa, and alsofor poorvakarma prior to shodhan chikitsa. Itcan be administered toone particular area of thebody or the wholebody. Theprocedure of administeringswedanaisn’t constant and can changein accordance with the requirementsthat the person.
PRADHAN KARMA OR SHODHAN CHIKITSA
1) VAMANA
It is atreatment that is controlled to preventvomiting. Vamana therapyis a remedy fordoshas called kapha.When the dosha is overan amount of limit and thentransferred to another location and needs tobeexpelledaway from yourbody. Kapharesidesin the chestarea andremoving it throughthe oral routeissimple.
HERBA USED AS VAMAK DRAVYA
Madana phala Panchakarma Treatment in Nashik is considered to be thebestvamak dravya. Other herbsto use includenimba, kutaja,yashtimadhu vacha, etc.
Therapeutic emesis is of 2types-
1.)Gastric emesisstimulates the gastric mucosa , andlater the vomiting centre inthe brain.
2.)Central emesis – ittriggers the medulla of thebrainand then vomiting centerin the brain.
Vomiting is regulated by thean oblongata medulla in the brainandstarts with lots ofsalivation and nausea.

HERBS USED AS VAMAK DRAVYA
Vamana therapywhen an aggravatedthe kapha dosha that causes disease,orthe dominant kapha doshawith pitta dosha causesthe disease.The therapy has specificlimitations and contraindications.
INDICATIONS-
Thetherapy is indicated indiarrhea and dysentery as well as feverthat is recent in origin, cough, cold,urinary tractdisorders, anorexia, skin disease or respiratory illness, stomach indigestionfibroid, goiter, filariasisetc.
CONTRAINDICATIONS-
Patientswith a kapha dosha less thannormalshould not undergovammanatherapy.Pregnant women, withoutsnehana karma, strong agni(digestive system) and those who areanxious, hungry and children, elderly or weak, with an enlargedcolon, intestinal parasitesenlarged prostate and etcin such cases vamana karmashould be avoided.
2) VIRECHAN
Virechan (purgation)can be described as the second of the karmaofpanchakarma. It isone of the most commonlyemployed therapies, with particular emphasis onconditions caused by anaggravated pitta dosha. The pittadosha gets eliminatedwith force via the anal pathway.The doshas get eliminated withlesser stress and problemsin comparison to vamana Karma. Itcould also be administeredinpitta kapha or vata pittadoshas where pitta dominates. Thetherapy involves following specificeating regimens to attain thenormaleating habits and finishthetreatment.
HERBS USED AS VIRECHAK DRAVYA
Virechan drugs include milk, takra, gavakshi, vacha, punarnava, shala, panchmoola, saptala, haritaki, kashmarya, draksha, jyotishmati, vibhitaki, amalaki, abhaya etc.
Depending on the medicine used,virechan is of 2 types2 types
1.) Snigdha virechan- meaning ofSnigdha isoily. It isa reference to pitta when itisconnected tovata dosha.
2.) Rooksha virechan- itis a sign that pitta islinked to kapha dosha.
INDICATIONS
Virechancan be givenconstipation, gout, piles and jaundice. It can also be caused by liver disease and splenomegaly. Ascites,dysuria, pain in largecolon, urogenitalsystem infemales and males, nasal bleeding etc.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Diarrhea, poor digestion and dysentery as well as ulcersin the rectum and emaciatedperson, following excessiveOleation treatments, wounds, etc.areall instances in whichvirechanis not indicated.
3) BASTI KARMA
Inolden daystheurinarybladder (basti) wasutilized as anequipmenttothe enema.So the name for theprocedure is basti karma.
Basti isa special treatmentinayurvedic panchakarma.It is a treatment that uses medicated gheeoil, decoction etcare administeredvia the rectalvaginal and urinary routes. Itboosts immunity and improvesthe overall health of an individual. Vatadosha is the cause ofall the diseasesand basti karmacan be the treatmentthat is most effective in calmingvata dosha.Hence it is describedas ‘ardhaChikitsa’ .

Thetreatment of medicines usinghugei or basti(urinary bladder) iscalled basti karma.
One or more of theherbal decoctions, medicated oil-gheeor similar, mamsarasa, rakta as well as othermedicines in the form ofliquid are used depending uponthecondition of the diseasedperson.

Jeevaka, rishabhaka, jeevanti, guduchi, gokshura, bala, draksha, shatavari, shatpushpa, yashtimadhu, amalaki, brihati, dadima,pippali, vidanga, adraka, musta, nimbi, kutaja etc are used for basti karma.
