POORVA KARMA

SNEHANA
It’s also knownasOleation Therapy.it is one of thetreatments that are done prior tocommencing the Panchakarma Therapy.InCharaka Samhita there are mainlyfour kinds of snehana dravyathat are considered to be the most effective for snehan.
1) Ghee (ghrita)
2) Oil (taila)
3) Fat (vasa)
4) Bonemarrow(majja)
Dadimadighrita, tila taila the bala tailaGhrita, etc are a few ofthemedicines that are usedinsnehana.
Themethod lubricates the wholebodyby applying medicated oils/gheeboth externally and internally.When the medicated oil or ghee isadministered internally it is calledsnehapanam, it is veryvital to perform this procedure in order to achieve Panchakarma.
CLASSIFICATION OF SNEHANA-
1) Internal oleation-
Itincludes consumption ofSnehana Dravya in a prescribedornon-medicated form. Itcan or should notbecombinedwith other ayurvedicmedications or food items.The method lubricates thetissuesand other parts of thehuman body.
2) External oleation/massage/abhyanga
Italso includes head massage, body massage,gargle , etc. with medicated oil.
SWEDANA
It is also calledsteam therapyortherapeutic sudation, isthe second procedure performed beforePanchakarma.The therapy increasescirculation of blood and removestoxic substances through pores on the skinand the body.
It isone ofthemost effective techniques that hasbeenpracticed since longback. Itis used foran shaman chikitsa, and alsoin the form of poorvakarma prior to shodhan. PRADHAN KARMA OR SHODHAN CHIKITSA
1) VAMANA
It is amethod of controlling therapeuticvomiting. Vamana therapyis indicated indoshas called kapha.When the dosha is overan amount of limit and thentransferred to another place, it need tobeexpelledcompletely from ourbody. Therapeutic emesis is of 2types-
1.)Gastric emesis- itstimulates the gastric mucosa andlater the vomiting centre inthe brain.

Vamana therapywhen an aggravatedKapha dosha is causing diseaseorwhen dominant kapha dosha in conjunctionwith pitta doesha causesdisease.There are certainwarnings and contraindications.
INDICATIONS-
Thetreatment is recommended fordiarrhea, dysentery, feverfrom recent causes such as cold, coughasthma, tumour,urinary tractdisorders, anorexia, skin disease or respiratory illness, stomach indigestion,fibroid, goiter, filariasisetc.
CONTRAINDICATIONS-
Patientswith kapha dosha belownormalshould not undergovammanatherapy.Pregnant women, withoutthe karma of snehana, strong agni(digestive system) and those who areanxious, hungry youngsters, older people and weak people, who have an over-sizedspleen, intestinal parasites,enlarged prostate and etcin these cases, vamana karmamust be avoided.
2) VIRECHAN
Virechan (purgation)is the 2nd karmainpanchakarma. It isone of the widelyused therapy, especially indiseases caused due toPitta dosha imbalance. The pittadosha is eliminatedforcibly through the anal route.The doshas get eliminated withless stress and complicationsthan vamana karma. Itmay also be administeredinpitta-kapha and vata-pittadoshas in which pitta is the dominant. Thetherapy requires following a particulareating regimens to attain thenormaleating habits and finishthetreatment.
HERBS USED AS VIRECHAK DRAVYA
Virechan drugs include milk, takra, gavakshi, vacha, punarnava, shala, panchmoola, saptala, haritaki, kashmarya, draksha, jyotishmati, vibhitaki, amalaki, abhaya etc.
Based on the type of medicine that is administered,virechan is of 2 typesThere are two types of virechan –
1) Snigdha virechan- meaning ofSnigdha meansoily. It isa reference to pitta when itisassociated withvata dosha.
2) Rooksha virechan- itis a sign that pitta isconnected to kapha dosha.
INDICATIONS
Virechancan be givenconstipation, gout, piles as well as jaundice, liver disease ascites, splenomegalydysuria, pain or discomfort in the largeintestine, disease of urogenitalsystem inmale and female, nasal bleeding etc.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Poor digestive system, diarrhea or dysentery, an ulcerin the rectum, an emaciatedperson, following excessiveOleation treatment, or wounds, etc.areinstances wherevirechanis not indicated.
3) BASTI KARMA
Inearlier times,thebladder (basti) wasutilized as anequipmentforthe enema.This is why the name of theprocedure is basti Karma.
Basti isone of the special treatmentsforayurvedic panchakarma.The medicated ghee,oil, decoction etcare administeredvia rectal,vaginal and urinary channels. Itimproves the immune system and increasesoverall health for an individual. Vatadosha causesall the diseasesand basti karmais the remedythat is most effective in calmingvata dosha.Thus, it is describedas ‘ardhaChikitsa’ .
